Your car’s braking system is one of its most important safety systems, but brake wear can develop gradually without being obvious from behind the wheel. At Western Automotive Centre, we check the braking system as part of every service and record the remaining brake pad thickness in your service report, helping you keep track of wear and plan repairs before they become urgent.

A modern braking system includes several components working together. Brake pads create friction against the disc rotors to slow the vehicle, while some vehicles use brake shoes and drums, particularly on rear axles. Brake fluid transfers hydraulic pressure from the brake pedal to the brake components, while callipers, hoses and seals help apply and control braking force.

During servicing, these components can be inspected for wear, damage, corrosion and leaks. Brake fluid condition is also important because it can absorb moisture over time, potentially affecting braking performance and contributing to corrosion within the hydraulic system.

Brake problems don't always begin with a complete failure. Watch for:

A brake pedal that feels soft, spongy or unusually hard

The vehicle pulling to one side under braking

Brake, ABS or other warning lights appearing on the dashboard

Ignoring these symptoms can allow worn pads to damage discs, increase stopping distances or place additional strain on other braking components.

Regular inspection helps identify wear before it becomes a bigger repair. In Truganina, everyday stop-start driving, heavy traffic, wet weather and road conditions can all contribute to brake wear. Towing, carrying heavy loads and frequent hill driving can increase brake temperatures and accelerate component wear.

An important fact: brake pads can wear unevenly, so measuring their remaining thickness provides more useful information than simply looking at the outside pad.

For brake servicing, inspections or advice about unusual braking symptoms, speak with the team at Western Automotive Centre. As an independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre member, they can help keep your vehicle's braking system operating safely and reliably.

Brake Service: Don’t Wait Until Your Brakes Start Making a Scene

Before we explain further, here are the three most important things every vehicle owner should understand:

The Three Things Every Driver Should Know About Car Batteries

A battery can fail with very little warning—especially once it's over three years old.

Modern vehicles place much greater demands on batteries than older cars, making regular testing more important than ever.

A quick battery test can often detect problems before you're left stranded with a vehicle that won't start.

You're already running late. You jump into the car, press the start button or turn the key, expecting the engine to fire into life.

Instead...

A slow crank.

A clicking sound.

Or worse—complete silence.

Most of us don't think much about our car battery until it lets us down, but it's one of the hardest-working components in any vehicle. Whether you drive a family SUV, daily commuter, 4WD, ute or light commercial van, your battery is responsible for getting every journey underway.

At Western Automotive Centre in Truganina, battery health is checked during every scheduled service. If you have any concerns between services, simply drop in during business hours for a FREE battery test—no appointment necessary.

Have You Ever Turned the Key… and Nothing Happened?

Most people think a battery's only job is starting the engine.

That's certainly its biggest job, but modern batteries do much more than that.

Your battery supplies electrical power to the starter motor, fuel system, engine computer, lighting, security system, infotainment screen and countless electronic control modules throughout the vehicle.

Once the engine is running, the alternator generates electricity to power the vehicle while also recharging the battery.

Think of the battery as the vehicle's energy reserve. Every time you start the engine, you're making a withdrawal. The alternator then repays that energy while you drive.

If either system isn't working properly, the battery gradually loses its ability to perform.

Modern cars use far more electricity than vehicles built twenty years ago.

Large touchscreens, reversing cameras, radar safety systems, heated seats, electric tailgates, multiple USB charging ports and advanced computers all rely on a healthy electrical system.

Many newer vehicles also feature Stop/Start technology, which automatically switches the engine off at traffic lights to reduce fuel consumption.

Unlike a standard battery, Stop/Start vehicles use specially designed batteries that are built to withstand hundreds of additional engine starts every week. They're more sophisticated, longer lasting under these conditions—and generally more expensive to replace.

Installing the wrong battery can reduce performance, trigger warning lights or even damage components, which is why choosing the correct battery is important.

Why Modern Vehicles Need Better Batteries

Contrary to popular belief, batteries don't normally die overnight.

Most gradually lose their ability to hold charge as they age.

Although today's batteries are largely maintenance free, they still wear out over time. Cold winter mornings place extra strain on older batteries because chemical reactions inside the battery slow down in lower temperatures. At the same time, the engine requires more effort to turn over.

If your battery is more than three years old, it's worth having it tested regularly—even if it still seems to be working normally.

Australian conditions can also shorten battery life. Around Truganina, summer heat can accelerate internal battery wear, while cold winter mornings often reveal weaknesses that have been developing for months.

Frequent short trips, heavy stop-start traffic, towing, camping accessories, dash cameras and constantly charging mobile devices can all place extra demands on your vehicle's electrical system.

Preventative testing is far easier—and much less inconvenient—than waiting until the battery fails completely.

A battery rarely fails without warning—it usually gives subtle clues first. Regular testing helps catch problems before you're stranded.

A failing battery often provides warning signs well before it stops working altogether.

Keep an eye out for:

The engine cranking more slowly than usual.

Dashboard warning lights appearing unexpectedly.

Electrical accessories behaving strangely.

These symptoms don't always mean the battery is at fault—they can also indicate charging system or alternator problems—which is why professional testing is worthwhile.

At Western Automotive Centre, battery testing takes the guesswork out by measuring the battery's condition, available starting power and charging performance.

Replacing a worn battery before it fails completely offers several benefits.

You'll enjoy more reliable starting, particularly on cold mornings, while protecting sensitive vehicle electronics from low-voltage problems.

A healthy battery also reduces strain on the starter motor and charging system, helping these expensive components last longer.

If testing shows replacement is required, Western Automotive Centre supplies and fits quality Bond Batteries for passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles and 4WDs.

They carry stock of many popular battery sizes for same-day replacement, subject to availability, and every Bond Battery is backed by a manufacturer's warranty for added peace of mind.

The correct battery is selected to suit your vehicle's specifications, including vehicles fitted with Stop/Start technology.

Replacing Your Battery Before It Lets You Down

While no battery lasts forever, a few simple habits can help maximise its lifespan:

Practical Tips to Help Your Battery Last Longer

Have your battery tested every scheduled service.

Arrange additional testing once it's over three years old.

Avoid leaving lights or accessories on when the engine isn't running.

If you mostly drive short distances, take the vehicle for an occasional longer drive to help recharge the battery.

Have electrical faults investigated promptly rather than ignoring warning signs.

A battery can still show 12 volts on a simple voltmeter yet have insufficient cranking power to start the engine. That's why professional battery testers measure much more than voltage—they assess the battery's ability to deliver the high current needed to start your vehicle under load.

Your battery works hard every day but is often forgotten until something goes wrong. Regular testing is one of the simplest ways to avoid unexpected breakdowns, particularly once your battery is more than three years old.

Whether you drive a family car, SUV, 4WD, ute or light commercial vehicle, the experienced team at Western Automotive Centre in Truganina can inspect your battery, explain its condition in plain English and recommend the most suitable solution if replacement is needed.

As your local independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre, they offer honest advice, FREE battery testing, quality Bond Batteries backed by manufacturer warranties and professional fitting. If you've noticed any warning signs—or you'd simply like peace of mind before your next trip—drop in or book your next service with Western Automotive Centre today.

Car Battery Replacement & Testing in Truganina | Western Automotive Centre

If you drive a Ford Transit or Transit Custom fitted with the 2.0L EcoBlue diesel engine, there’s an important update you shouldn’t ignore.

Ford has reduced the recommended timing belt service interval:

Ford Transit Timing Belt Replacement & Service Interval

This change applies to both van and passenger (Tourneo) models.

The reason? Oil dilution caused by Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration in low-emission diesel engines. This process can contaminate engine oil, accelerating timing belt wear—especially in vehicles used for short trips, stop-start driving, or urban deliveries.

At Western Automotive Centre, the team regularly services these vehicles and understands how Australian driving conditions can impact timing belt life.

A fleet-operated Ford Transit Custom van fitted with the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine was recently booked into Western Automotive Centre, a trusted Truganina mechanic, for routine servicing and inspection. The vehicle had travelled close to 150,000km and was primarily used for frequent short trips around Truganina, including stop-start driving conditions typical of urban and trade use.

While the customer had no immediate drivability concerns, they had become aware of updated manufacturer recommendations regarding timing belt replacement intervals. Previously scheduled at 10 years or 240,000km, Ford has revised this interval to 6 years or 160,000km, raising concerns about potential premature wear and reliability risks. Given the vehicle’s usage and mileage, the customer wanted to ensure everything remained within safe operating limits.

Fleet Transit Van Recent Service & Timing Belt Replacement

The experienced technicians at Western Automotive Centre carried out a comprehensive inspection as part of the scheduled service. This included:

Reviewing the vehicle’s service history and manufacturer updates

Conducting a visual inspection of accessible timing system components

Performing a diagnostic scan to check for any stored fault codes

Assessing engine oil condition and signs of contamination

During the inspection, attention was given to the known issue affecting these engines—engine oil dilution. This can occur when the diesel particulate filter (DPF) undergoes regeneration, particularly in vehicles used for short trips where the engine doesn’t consistently reach optimal operating temperature.

Over time, diluted engine oil can reduce the effectiveness of lubrication and contribute to accelerated wear of the timing belt and associated components. While no catastrophic damage had occurred yet, the technicians identified that the timing belt system was approaching the updated service limit and posed a potential risk of failure if left unaddressed.

A failed timing belt can result in severe internal engine damage, including bent valves and costly repairs—making preventative maintenance critical.

To ensure ongoing reliability, Western Automotive Centre carried out a complete timing belt replacement, including:

Inspection of surrounding components for wear or contamination

Fresh engine oil and filter replacement to address any dilution concerns

This proactive timing belt service not only aligned the vehicle with Ford’s updated maintenance schedule but also significantly reduced the risk of unexpected breakdowns.

Following the repair, the van demonstrated improved engine smoothness and reliability, giving the customer confidence in their fleet’s performance—especially important for business operations that rely on dependable transport.

As an independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre, Western Automotive Centre uses quality parts and follows manufacturer guidelines, backed by a nationwide warranty for added peace of mind. Their expertise in light diesel vehicle servicing and fleet maintenance ensures vehicles like this Ford Transit continue to perform safely and efficiently in demanding local conditions.

This case highlights the importance of staying informed about manufacturer updates and trusting a knowledgeable Truganina mechanic to carry out essential preventative maintenance.
